Flu - Upgrade?
Welp...I got the flu.
This month's newsletter is delayed and shortened because the flu caught me and asked me (in a not so nice voice) to sit down and rest for a few days.
The flu was very persuasive!
The CDC tells us that this year's flu season is more severe than it has been since 2017. Media outlets are calling it the "Super Flu".
If you came down with this bug and lost all energy for a week, you are in good company. During the holidays, I was horizontal for days, unable to do basic things like showering and eating. Yuck!
It's humbling to be so sick. I take pride in caring for my health. I give my body high quality supplements. I am a healer. And yet the flu got me too. It is indiscriminate.
For the last several years, I've been shifting my perception of sickness. I no longer see myself as a victim of the flu. Instead, the flu is offering an Upgrade.
What is an upgrade?
When a computer receives an upgrade, it is rebooted before the changes take effect. In the same way, humans need to shutdown periodically so they can process their varied experiences. It is in those moments of quiet restfulness that we reorganize, rejuvenate, and heal before rebooting back into the world of the living.
Sickness forces our hand to cancel appointments and postpone commitments. An illness gives us the opportunity to practice putting our needs first. When we return to health, we get to reprioritize how to spend our time going forward.
On a physical level, we upgrade as well. During this flu I had So. Much. Phlegm. Phlegm is created from stagnation in the body and mind. It is the old stuff that needs to move. Phlegm contains sticky ancestral patterns and current life gunk that has been waiting years to shift and cleanse.
Being sick is a time when everything in the body is shaken up. Sediment is brought to the surface. Toxins are released from the depths of the body. Coping mechanisms show their cracks. Everything is seen as it is. This is an opportunity to choose a new way to address your needs.
All of this is to say that I believe that I'm upgrading right now. I'm clearing out the old energy, reorganizing what stays around, learning to discern my needs, and ready to see what is next!
It feels right to start the new year with a newly upgraded self. I'm grateful for the shedding, and ready to gallop forward! May you be well and be aligned in the upcoming year!
